Even the ancient civilizations of Rome and Greece played a version of soccer which involved carrying and kicking a ball. These games were played to entertain spectators seated in huge amphitheatres and were usually quite frenzied.
According to medieval folklore villages engaged in a primitive version of the game where players would kick a skull into the town square of a nearby village. The opposing village would then retaliate by attempting to kick the skull back into the other villages' square. Gradually the skulls were replaced by balls made of pig's bladders and a final leather prototype was conceived. This gave players the liberty to use special techniques and implement ideas to win a game.
Despite the alacrity and enthusiasm of the public, the game was rebuked by monarchs such as King Edward who passed a legislation prohibiting anyone from playing the game during his tenure. According to him, the game was vulgar and indecent and dissuaded people from engaging in more noble pursuits such as archery.
It was in the year 1855 that the first modern version of the football was invented. Made out of vulcanized rubber this prototype revolutionized the game. Soccer increased in its popularity and flourished throughout the globe, especially in England where it was known as football.
